Chinese bamboo flute has seldom been found in historical records until in the1930s when Feng Zicung, the artist made his solo debut. During the ensuing more than half century, bamboo flute professionals, performers and educators come forth in large numbers, common people become more acquainted with and adore it, and many excellent flute works come out.Although the performing skills and teaching standards of Chinese bamboo flute have advanced swiftly and vigorously, some problems remain to be solved:1, there is a lack of scientific, normative and ideal textbooks, especially with regard to the comprehensive theoretical analysis of breath drill and management.2, the performing and learning of bamboo flute in the professional as well as amateur fields is not very rigorous and normative.3, in some art colleges or institutes, what is pursued is only the showing off of skills and stunts, not the deep understanding and appreciation of the essence of the traditional works.4, there is, in the bamboo flute instruction, a comparative overlook of the breath drill and management, or no workable solutions to achieve the desired effects. The paper is to tentatively explore and research into the series of breath rules in performing the Chinese bamboo flute, focusing on the components of flute tone colors, breath drill, influence of breath on other skills, and the application of breath in different styles of performances.
