In modern Chinese, there has long been a preponderance of bisyllable, but unceasingsocial transformation has gradually translocated such preponderance to trisyllable.Meanwhile, rapid economic development and continuing improvement of people’s livingstandard allow an increasingly important role to neologism to serve in people’s daily life.Among them, trisyllabic neologism are highly focused and adored by the masses. What this paper investigates are all trisyllabic neologisms that came into focus duringthe period from the year2006to2010. A detailed discussion is conducted on the prosodicfeatures and their integrative effect on trisyllabic neologism, theoretically grounded onMcCarthy and Prince’s theory of prosodic morphology, S. Feng’s theory of prosodic syntaxof Chinese and Fauconnier’s theory of conceptual integration. Based on earlier researchresults, this paper probes from the perspective of prosody into the prosodic features oftrisyllabic neologism, and elucidates the relation of conceptual integration to their prosodicframe. This paper consists of five chapters. The first is the introductory chapter, informingthe reader of the author’s motivation for selecting this research subject, earlier researchesinto this subject and the findings having been reaped, the methodology of this research, thesource of used language materials and so on. The second chapter deals with some vitalissues regarding trisyllabic neologisms, including the definition of a few terms, the analysisof the cause of trisyllabification of neologisms, and the classification of trisyllabicneologisms according to their structural features, together with a brief analysis of theircause of formation. Chapter3analyzes the prosodic features of trisyllabic neologisms.First, it offers a description of the overall features of trisyllabic neologisms. Then it givesan in-depth analysis of the prosodic features of three categories that are quite distinct fromcommon trisyllabic words or expressions, thus clarifying their dissimilarities in prosody. The fourth chapter centres on the relation between the conceptual integration of trisyllabicneologisms and their prosodic frame. Founded on the theory of conceptual integration, trisyllabic neologisms fall under three different levels of integration, and based on thislevelization, it further discusses the relation between the degree of integration of trisyllabic neologisms and their prosodic frame. The final chapter is a conclusion of the entire paper, and the limitations and defects of this paper are also pointed out. This paper investigates from the perspective of prosody into trisyllabic neologisms, and, by noting the information of conceptual integration, further discusses the relationbetween the degree of integration of trisyllabic neologisms and their prosodic frame. Theresearch findings of this paper contribute to better understanding of the developing trendand inclination of neologisms, and provide certain reference for the standardization ofmodern Chinese. |
