Teaching and learning of Chinese characters have long time been the emphasisand also the difficulty of teaching Chinese as a second language. The difficulties ofwriting, recognizing as well as understanding Chinese characters keep foreignlearners back from improving their language abilities. Chinese characters as anindispensable part of the Chinese language are of inevitability for any one who wantsto go further. The effectiveness of teaching and learning Chinese characters largelydetermine the results of the language acquisition. That is to say, he who is bad atcharacters will never stand a chance to master the language skillfully. Studies onteaching and learning of Chinese characters aimed on beginners, however, have so farachieved little. The effectiveness of teaching practice so far was just also barelysatisfactory.The aim of this paper is at selecting the most necessary characters for the foreignlearners without a background of Chinese characters in the first semester. Throughdevelop the fundamental character ability to reduce the psychological resistance tocharacters, as well as to assure their future success of learning the language.
