Shuihui Garden Research Literature Activities

Mao Xiang (1611-1693), called as Bi Jiang, was one of the four Cedries at the end of the Ming dynasty. Famous very early, he then even became the spiritual leader of fellow countrymen after the downfall of the Ming dynasty. In the late Ming dynasty, he lived in seclusion and often prepared a large banquet to invite many guests to his Shui Hui garden, during which time a lot of scholars got together, chatted, drank and wrote poetry with each other to declare their own pursuits. It almost formed the scene that the whole world was full of hermits. In his old age, Mao Xiang compiled all the poetry, articles and verse created and chanted with his companions as The Companion Anthology, comprised of twelve volumes. This work can help us well know the grand atmosphere. Therefore, this paper summarizes these activities and calls them Shui Hui Garden Activities, which is a highly generation of the initiation activity held by Mao Xiang.The paper are divided into four parts. The first chapter introduces the cultural connotation of Shui Hui Garden and the formation of the initiation group. In the first chapter,The first section discusses the characteristics and culture connotation of this Shui Hui Garden. Based on the studies of previous scholars, it further studies and introduces the scene of Shui Hui Garden, and further analyzes its cultural connotation as a carrier of literary activity. The second section puts an emphasis on the sketch of the literati participating in the Shui Hui garden literacy activity, Mao family, Famous people here and Mao Xiang’s colleague respectively. In the second chapter, it mainly studies and summarizes the Shui Hui literacy activities. The first section gives out the classification of Shui Hui literacy activity. According to the content of the activity, three kinds are classified, which fully show the general picture of the Shui Hui literacy activities to restore the real scene of this literacy activity. Based on this, the paper summarizes its characteristics. Then the second section discusses the reasons why the Shui Hui literacy activity is frequently held. On the background of the popularity of the Initiation activity, it mainly analyzes Mao Xiang’s nobal family and his personal charm. The third chapter illustrates the extending influences of the Shui Hui garden literacy activity from longitudinal and transverse aspects. The first section discusses the deep influences of the Shui Hui garden literacy activity on the society of that time and later generations. And the second section mainly analyzes the influences of the Shui Hui garden literacy activity on literal individuals as Mao Xiang and Chen Weisong. The last chapter introduces the works of the Initiation activity from three aspects of the system characteristics, the theme orientation and the artistic characteristics.
