The mid-9th century large-scale supperesion of Buddism by Tibetan King Glang Dar-ma,the42nd ruler from the Tubo kingdom,finally led to revolts in which the king was assassinated and the Kingdom’s rule toppled. A split Tibet found itself in prolonged wars amang the regional states.Rinchen Zangpo (rin chen bzang po,958-1055) was a prolific translatore during the early part of the Later Spread (phyi dar) of Buddhism in Tibet. Born in the region of Ngari (mnga’ris) in west Tibet, he was ordained as a monk at the age of thirteen. Lama Ye-shes-vod proceeded to send21young bright Tibetans headed by Rin-chen Bzang-po and Wo-le-be-shes-rab to Kashmir to study Buddist canons. The primate also invite Indian Buddists Shadagare and Womada to produce Tibetan translations of hetu(logic) writings and Buddist texts canonized by different sects.When Rin-chen-bzang-Po and his mates returned, they settled at Mtho-ling monastery to translate Buddist scriptures and preach. As a great translator Rin-chen bzang-po was known for his attainments in the different traditions of Tantric teachings. He attained enlightenment through his devoted lerning from different authorities. He formulated a series of norms in connection with fatherhood, motherhood and social relations.For his significant contributions, Rin-chen bzang-po won high appreciation from Tibetan historians, who regared his as the earliest Tibetan Buddist translator of Tantric writings, concluding that he played a major role in the endeavor that was eventually to make Tantrism more popular in the latter stage of Tibetan Buddism than it had been in the earlier stage.Rin chen bzang po was involved in the construction of numerous temples and religious monuments throughout mnga’ris and spu hrangs, including areas in present day northern India such as Ladakh, Zangskar, Lahaul, Spiti, and Kinnaur.
