In late Ming and early qing dynasty,a group of artists gathered at Huizhouarea——Xin’an county in the ancient records, they were remembered as Xin’anschool.Xin’an school was leaded by Jian Jiang whom was the most famous painter inthat period.Xin’an school was composed of pure adherent artists at thebeginning, and its members were basicly formed by Jian Jiang’s and his friends’students at the last. There were no clear specifications when “Xin’an school” was putforward, so people constantly mixture Xin’an school with The Xin’an Four bymistake: all of The Xin’an Four are not representatives or members of Xin’anschool. This article comb the reason of the formation and the characteristics of Xin’anschool’s style through the definition of Xin’an school, the affections of theConfucianists and nature scenery, and analyzing works and esthetics of Xin’anschool. As a unique scenery in Xin’an area, mout Huangshan produced an indelibleeffect on the formation of Xin’an school’s art style.Although a lot of Xin’an painterssuch as Jian Jiang, Dai Benxiao, Jiang Zhu loved to paint its beautiful scene, mountHuangshan could not be used as a standard to define the name or the member of anart style,it could only provide their enthusiasm of creating for the painters, exsistedas a nature scenery, it’s just one of the external reasons of the style formation ofXin’an school. There is no great argument about the late Xin’an school artists, therefore thisarticle lays emphasis on the painters in the same priod with Jian Jiang. Some of themwere connected with each other, some were closed to each other, and due to thedifferences of their painting styles and art ideas, it’s hard to draw a conclusion.Afterdetermining the style of Xin’an school which was leaded by Jian Jiang shoud givepriority to terse, dry and cold, this article summarized that the common features ofXin’an school are tersly using the ink, structured with lines in the picture, using less wrinkle methods or just go with lines instead, dedicate cold rhyme. Considering thesefeatures, started with the painters appeared in Xin’an area or be closed to Xin’anschool’s artists in this period, by analyzing their representative works,we definedthe paiters with similar style are members of Xin’an school. The Xin’an school was basically built on adherent artists, and there were evenno exception at the beginning,so the adherent thought became Xin’an school’s mainconcept of painting. It affected these artists’ ways of life, avoiding reality because ofcurrent events, their spirit lived within the mountains and woods in theirpaintings, describing their wishes with wrinting-brush, these can be connected toadherent thought. The Xin’an school’s artists advocated painting gully to write downtheir thought.By refuting the trandition that “worshiping six methods”,they deliveredthe true spirit of “clear your heart then taste the objects”, The style of Xin’anschool’s painting is unique: dry, cold;they made more efforts to break through thearticle barrier: refute going with the past. claimed that to surpass the past, speak tonature directly, and get the harmony of nature and humanity.
