Visual environment is gaining more and more momentum at this era, when a transition in visual culture istaking place. As a component of visual environment, graphic design is more than a medium of visualinformation at this moment. The same is true with the exhibition hall, a platform for culture instruction andcommunication, whose visual environment presents a special social culture. No matter what forms it is in,graphic design in the exhibition hall must take into consideration its effects on the overall visualenvironment, which are extended into the exhibition space from visual identity to visual guidance, and thento the integration with exhibits. Thus, further exploration is in need on the proper application of graphicdesign in the visual space of the exhibition hall. This thesis focuses on the extension of graphic design in the exhibition space. First, it analyzes thebackground and theoretical framework of this extension with theories on design, aesthetics, psychology, iconology and semiotics, elaborating the significance of this extension. Then, it discusses various forms ofthe extension with several examples, and makes a tentative summary of the methods of the extension on twoaspects, its form-sense and interaction. At the end, it points out the current restraints on the extensionthrough analysis on several typical cases and throws an outlook into the future. The Author anticipatesthrough this interdisciplinary research, to expand studies on graphic design to make it better serve thedisplay and education functions of exhibition space, and extend the application of the visual system inexhibition space to broader areas.
