Learn From The Country

Chinese design is undergoing a profound transformation now. At first, Chinese design: is only a passive imitation, which was a lack of cultural awareness. Afterwards, Chinese designers start to explore the position of design in modern society, and also how could design serve people in their daily life. It is may be seen as a process of the growth and maturity of Chinese design. During this process, Chinese design circle needs to determine the significance of the existence and future challenges, and then find out the direction."Rural design" is one of the strategic choices for such thinking. Starting from the self-examination of civilization history, this paper re-orienting the start and the connotation of rural design, combined with the forefront of research in sociology,ecology,etc, the rural construction experience in some Asian countries as well as China’s. To compare the different types of behavior pattern of "return" to rural, this paper deduced the possibility of design field conversion, explored the possibility of under the premise of respect the rural logic to "learn from the rural", in order to create a new rural life. This paper made the above thinking based on historical responsibility and the realistic needs of Chinese design development. The re-design of Chinese rural life is a formidable project in theoretical exploration and practical innovation. Issues being discussed in this paper are just a beginning of the research; the author will continually work on them. The author firmly believe that the bright future of the Chinese design must include a brave practice to solve the problem of "rural disign". This is a realistic issue and also is an unavoidable historical responsibility.It requires the continued efforts of several generations to achieve. Today’s Chinese design circle should start to think about it and try to find some solutions.
