Whitney Museum of American Art was established in1932, focusing on collecting, researching and promoting American modern and contemporary art. Whitney Biennial is so far the only periodically held art exhibition on American art. However with globalization and transformation of American economical and political status, the context of American art has changed radically. This thesis explores75th Whitney Biennial to shed light on the situation of American art.The aim of the thesis is to establish a research paradigm on art exhibition through thorough case study, besides to preserve materials for latter researchers. Each exhibition is a combination of various factors thus providing different perspectives for the researchers.The thesis analyzes on the following four aspects:artists, artworks, scenography and supporting service, using catalogue, official website, artists’ biography and bibliography as well as press reviews. Through studying55participating artists, the thesis tries to understand the exhibition theme and its relations with curators’ criteria.Through restoring the origin view of75th Whitney Biennial, the thesis wishes to demonstrate the position of the biennial in various aspects, especially in the vertical and horizontal art world. |
