City Beautification Measures And Effects Of The Movement

The City Beautiful Movement is one of those social reformmovements took place at the turn of the20th Century. The movementLed by the social awared middle class elite, they attempt to refashiontheir cities into beautiful, functional entities. The ideal found physicalrealization in urban planning and urban design. The critics about themovement started while it’s still undertaking the process, starting withnegative ones. As time goes on, however, the positive influences beganto be re-recognized by various parts of the society, especially the urbanand social studies professionals. They provided various comments andpraised from different stand points largely enriched the studies towardthis issue.This thesis mainly focuses on the measures of the City BeautifulMovement, by analysis the measures in different phases of themovement and combining with its most typical cases as the materialsupports. The purpose is to make the supplemental studies emphasis onthe concrete historical information, achieve the aim of enrich theabstractive and conclusive studies by the predecessors.This Thesis is composed of three parts. The first part is introduction,reviews of the condition toward the current studies of the City BeautifulMovement issue, both domestic and foreign aspects. The second part isthe main body of the thesis, divided into four chapters. The first chapteris written on the appearance background of the City BeautifulMovement, mainly discusses the urban development condition and theurban problems at the turn of the century. The second chapterdiscusses the main measures in every phase of the movementsupported with the typical city cases materials. The third chapter ismainly focus on the influences led by these measures to urbandevelopment and the social lives. The fourth chapter cited the brief critics and meanings of the movement. In the third part in theconclusion of the thesis, briefly reviews the measure of the movement.
