English National Students Cohesive Use Vocabulary Research

Through error-analysis in foreign students’ using lexical cohesion in compositions, the essay aims to explore error causes, and accordingly give some suggestions finally. The reach objects are intermediate and senior students from English-speaking countries. The corpuses are41compositions of students with English speaking background from1992to2005, chosen from HSK dynamic composition corpus in Beijing Language and Culture University. Based on these corpuses, this essay carries out the research about lexical cohesion by means of Contrastive Analysis、Error Analysis and Data Statics. Mainly based on Halliday’s cohesion theory and borrowed from other academic research results, lexical cohesion is divided into five series:repetition、synonym or near-synonym、syperordinate、general word and collocation. After analyzing error characters of composition, we conclude the reasons for causing these errors of foreign students mainly are as follows:Firstly, negative transfer of mother tongue; Secondly, negative transfer of target language; Thirdly, negative transfer of culture; Fourthly, incorrect learning and communication strategies; Fifthly, the problem of atmosphere in studying language. At last, the essay gives empirical and concrete suggestions, concluding:Firstly, teaching of English-Chinese contrastive; Secondly, improvement of vocabulary teaching; Thirdly, the attention to discourse teaching; Fourthly, improvement of students learning psychology; Fifthly, strengthen of culture integration. The author hopes the research findings can contribute to Chinese-studying of students with English-speaking background.
