From the solitary explorer and enlightener in the realm of spirit disbelieving in Christianity, to the lamb listening to oracles of God, Bei Cun has experienced grueling struggles and certain transition which can be somewhat traced in his works. It is worth noting that this transition has happened to Chinese Intellectual lacking religious background and in a time when social revolution. The thesis can be divided into four parts:1. Introduction. This part provides an overview of the relationship between intellectuals and Christianity since modern times, so as to reflect the progressive development, rather than an abrupt emergence, of the relationship between Bei Cun and Christianity.2. Origins of skepticism. Struggles and doubts confronting Bei Cun during the process of accepting Christianity will be discussed in this part from two aspects:the context of the time in China and the western theology.3. Skepticism reflected in Bei Cun’s works. Firstly, this part will prove that Bei Cun’s struggle and skepticism are also embodied in his works as well as his spirits through the comparison of Bei Cun’s works before and after his transition. Then, via comparative analysis of the skepticism in religious classics and in Bei Cun’s works, this part will also explain that the skepticism embodied in Bei Cun’s works does not represent a wavering faith, but an evolution during the course of confirming his faith.4. Significance of Bei Cun’s skepticism. Bei Cun’s skepticism to the faith is much more than his own growing experiences through spiritual struggles, but also manifests the introspection and meditation of his generation under a special historical context in China. The thesis emphasizes that faith should be based on skepticism and challenges, instead of blind obedience.By means of discussing Bei Cun’s struggles and doubts during the course of accepting Christianity, the thesis tries to point out that his doubts is not a signal of rejection to an alien culture, but a product of the combination of Christian thought and Chinese culture. This demonstrates the contemplation of Chinese intellectuals, headed by Bei Cun, and their pursuit to a new spiritual palace.
