This essay mainly focus on the study of Yuanzhen, a literary giant during the middle of Tang Dynasty and the poetry he composed when he was banished from the court.Yuanzhen was an influential statesman and litterateur. He even enjoyed equal fame with Baijuyi, and they had been referred to as "YuanBai".Throughout his life Yuanzhen had gone through many difficulties and been banished for a couple of times. Even though, he held on to his dream to make efforts to advance the society. He also produced tons of great works both contain literature value and socio-historical value while trying his best to contribute to his nation.This essay tries to give an objective and comprehensive conclusion of Yuanzhen’s works during these hard times from consulting historical documents, poets’ biographies and his works.It contains three main parts:The first part inspects the cause of his banishment and how it went from a macroscopic perspective. Firstly the summary of his banishment, from the original reason of it, combines with the peculiar political system and social context of our country’s feudal society. We would know how this system existed and why it had developed that way. Then, stressing the importance of Qutyuan, he was the first person combined the banishment and literature, and points out he had an tremendous influence on this kind of literature. It developed fully until the middle Tang Dynasty. Beginning with the veneration the litterateurs during this period had for Quyuan and its thrive, we begin to know our protagonist in this essay---Yuanzhen.The second part is also the key part throughout this essay. By narrating an account of Yuanzhen’s poetry creation when he encountered5times banishment during20years, we studies the more specific details of his situations. The author classifies the poetry based on the contents into the following kinds:firstly, allegorical poems of the politic, and that contains a wide range of subjects. Secondly, being in hot water, never changed his will. He once was depressed, angry felt hopeless, but what we see is a great poet, who would do his utmost to serve the people whenever the circumstances are provided. Thirdly, memorial poetry, these poems provide us enough material to observe the changes of his emotions from the angle of affection and friendship. Fourthly, the poems made while his pursuing the Buddhism and immortality, he did that to relieve his depression. In addition, a few poems and be categorized as independent type hood like the ones describing the scenery, folkways and things like that. At the end of this part, the author analyzed his poems from the angle of emotions and unique characteristics, hope that the readers can have a more clear and comprehensive understand of his poems of banishment.The end of this essay, discusses the banishment’s influence on Yuanzhen and his poetry creation. Mainly includes the effects of the banishment had on the various contents and fields, and the promotion in means of artistic expression.The main purpose of this essay is try to comprehend the poet’s adherence to the Confucianism through his poetry, appreciate his profound feeling for the country and his ambition to work for it. By doing this we can see the true side of this poet, and give prominence to the real meaning of Yuanzhen’s works been done during his banishment.
