Paris,19th century, a galaxy of outstanding writers and artists gathered here with their famous name: Hugo, Balzac, George-Sang, Berlioz, Gounod and so on. The city not only cultivated its own people but also attracted many foreign musicians, such as Rossini, Liszt, Wagner and so on, making those master thoughts interacting, conflicting and merging with each other. From this carnival of art and culture, Massenet became a famous composer as his master pieces brought a link to the art of opera before and after his era."Werther", one of Massenet’s famous opera, has its story based on Goethe’s novel, which describes the complex and struggling love between the heroes and heroines. In this thesis, the author will mainly study the heroine, Charlotte of "Werther". With a series of analysis and various research methods, this thesis will investigate the deep characteristics of Charlotte, analysis the spiritual content and cultural importance of this opera.This thesis mainly contains5parts, shown as below.Chapter I, Introduction. This chapter introduces the reason of this study, the world wide situation of the study and the method used, along with the difficulties encountered during the whole study.Chapter II, Goethe and Charlotte. This chapter begins with the analysis of the literature of "Sorrows of Young Werther". By studying the origin of the article, the reason of Werther’s tragedy and the building of the character Charlotte, an overall understanding of the story and the image of heroine Charlotte will be revealed.Chapter III, Massenet and Charlotte. The discussion includes4parts:the history of French Romantic Period, Massenet’s life, the creation of the opera "Werther" and Charlotte’s characteristics in opera.Chapter IV, Charlotte’s aria. Extensive and comprehensive analysis of<letter aria>,<ValLaisse couler mes larmes> and<Ah!Mon courage m’abandonne!>.Chapter V, artists performance of Charlotte. This discussion is based on both the performance of the singer and the learning experience of the author.By the study and discussion of the5chapters, the author hopes this thesis can help others to get the crucial ideas of Massenet’s creation and understand the spiritual content and the artistic style, providing a guidance to vocal music, rising the enthusiasm and public attention on studying and enjoying this opera.
