Wan Yanshu, the uncle of the king of the end of the Jin Dynasty, went through fiveimperial court, Shi Zong, Zhang Zong, Wei Shaowang, Xuan Zong and Ai Zong.Because of the fight for the imperial power between his families, he suffered from asevere custody, which separated him from the important imperial position throughouthis life. Most of his extant poems, ci and prose were written after Zhen You Nan Du(1214) and shortly before the extinction of the Jin Dynasty. The thesis analyzes WanYanshu’s literary works associating with the background of his times, which helpsreveal the real features and literary achievements of this imperial member who deeplyinfluenced by the culture of Central Plains.There are altogether three chapters. The first chapter describes Wan Yanshu’s life,friends’ circle and ideology of the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.The second chapter deeply analyzes his poems, ci and proses respectively, revealing themarrow of his ideology and especially the dismal sentiment and his caring for the fate ofthe nation. The last chapter analyzes his idea of “adoring Su Shi, admiring TaoYuanming, approving Tang poetry” based on the artistic characteristics of his literaryworks. In addition, comparing with the writers of Nuzhen, Wan Yanliang, Wan Yanjingand Wan Yanshu, the thesis confirms the conclusion that Wan Yanshu is “the imperialmastermind of the century”.
