The representation and expression function of oil painting strokes make stroke one of the most important language of oil painting, especially the expression function of stroke endows it with independent artistic value and aesthetic appreciation, by means of which artists expressed their ideas and feelings.Therefore, the emotion and feeling that stroke conveys contain vast quantities of information about the personal traits of a painter. This article first makes a summary of expression function of stroke language and relevant personal traits,as well as an analysis of how personal traits affect the production of strokes.Then this article makes a comparison study between painters’ endowment, character features as well as life experience and the style of their strokes.Taking painters with relatively typical personal traits and works with apparent stroke features as models, this article reveals the relation between strokes and personal traits.Though the factors that influence the stroke style and stroke features of paintings are quite complex, the unique traits of a painter have always been an important factor which distinguishes his/her stroke style and features from those of others. Although it is impossible to decide that certain kind of stroke completely coincides with certain artist’s traits, generally speaking, there are still some laws to follow, which this article tries to prove with a lot of cases.Firstly, this article introduces the significance, current condition and innovation points of this study. Secondly, this article elaborates the concept of stroke expression and classification of expression of oil painting’s strokes.Then in the third chapter, this article explores the concept of traits and its classification, as well as makes a deep analysis of the relation between stroke and painters’ personal traits from various angles.In the fourth chapter, through the analysis of stroke expression in Western oil painting works,this article elaborates painters’ personal traits these oil paintings’ strokes reflect and relevant projects.
