EdwardA.Lippman (1920.5.31-- 2010.6.9) is the well-known musicologist inAmerican in the 20th century, Columbia University Professor of the musicdepartment. In this paper, Lippmann’s aesthetic thought of music are sorted outfrom the following aspects .First,The background of the Lippmann’s musicalaesthetic Ideology containing personal life, academic achievement, andacademic background; Second, The content of Lippmann’s Aesthetics of Musicincluding musical history aspects that is aesthetic ideology of the ancient Greekmusic, operatic aesthetics of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as wellas the Wagner’s musical aesthetic ideas; and musical philosophy that themusical features is discovered from the spatial awareness of the music ,and tosearch the muscial meaning from the musical symbolism; Third, studying thesignificance of the Lippmann‘s Aesthetics of Music consisting the evaluation ofthought is the significance of the development of contemporary Chinesemusical aesthetics. In China, even without translations published except the History of theWestern Music Aesthetics written by Fang Mingjian in Taiwan, the translationsof work and papers of Lipman is quite insufficient. Therefore ,It is difficult andinnovative to translate and introduct of Lipman ’s work and the research at thesame time. The author carried on the preliminary discussion of Lipman’s musicaesthetics through three research methods and steps including translation, research and reviews. Afterwards,I draw the conclusion that Lipman’s musicaesthetics were mainly influenced by the music phenomenology, musicsemiotics and music psychology during 19,20 century. Actually,we can see thatYin Galton, Lange and Hull Muhuo Shields’s academic views have the mostimportant impact on Lipman’s music aesthetics ,which can be found in thatLipman draw music phenomenological theory to study music in a matter of timeand learning from the theory of musical semiotics to study the symbolicmeaning of the music, and learning from the results of the psychology of musicto study the emotions of the music seen. So,we can see that the musical thoughtof Lipman has a distinct and clear philosophical origins. In addition, with hisunique method of study that looking at the music history with philosophical logicthinking and studying the music philosophy with the historiography of objectivecalm, the author argues that Lipman has original ideas on both of his study of the philosophy of music and the work of the history of music. With his profound knowledge and deep thinking, Lippmann not onlyshows the charm of musical aesthetics for us ,but also provides more referenceand reflection for the development of contemporary Chinese musicalaesthetics . I sincerely hope that it will have more students , scholars andexperts to recognize, approach and research him gradually through mytranslation and introduction.
