In the modern history of Chinses students studying overseas, as an inland province, Shanxi has provided fewer number of students and had less influence compared to offshore disticts.Despite this, Shanxi has also made its appearance in the movement signifying overseas-studying in late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period. From the end of the Qing Dynasty, the local officials commenced this mission; with the development of studying in Japan and the creation of modern schools therein, they began to send students to Japan. Meanwhile, University of Shanxi, set up by Li Timo from England, also sent students to England, making the overseas-studying movement in Shanxi top on the list within the inalnd provinces in North China. Though a little bit unorganized in the China Republic period, the total scale has also increased with students sent by the Northern Navy government and the Illegal government during the Anti-Japanses war period. As far as the preferable countries are concerned, they have mianly travelled to Japan, Britain and America, ranking according to the number of students. Japan was both popular in the two periods, while Britain only flourished in the end of the Qing Dynasty and America attracted more of them in the period of China Republic. In addition, other countries were also involved, such as France, Germany, Belgium, Swiss and so on. Talking about the majors they have taken, science subjects posed as the majority, especially for those sponsored by the government. On the other hand, those who studied on their own expense largely chose medical science, art or the science of society.Though limited in number, overseas students have taken an important role in the modern history of Shanxi. During the1911Revolution, Yan Xishan and other students studying in Japan took part in the League and they became leaders of the revolution and helped to overturn the Qing Dynasty. When the Anti-Japanese War broke out, they chose to be back in the motherland and resisted the Japanese together with the fellow Shanxi people. In a few decades, they became well-known in the legal construction, education and industiral construction and have shown huge patriotism in their due area. Some of them have also enrolled in the construction of the New Republic and offerec their own bit of ability.
