Zheng Huaixing Drama Research

Born in1948, Zheng Huaixing is a talented playwright in China’s modern era. As of2010, Zheng has written more than30play works. Included are new-style history dramas, which brought him great fame. This article explores the significance of the combination of his works and era and his exploration and contribution to the development of China’s play literature on the basis of his insistence of dramaticism. This article includes three parts.The first part is focused on Zheng’s life as a playwright and the impact of his works through a survey of his play works. Zheng’s contribution to the inheritance and development of Puxian drama in his hometown has won wide praises in playwrights’circle.The second part is the research on his selection of theme and relationship with then social environment. As a typical playwright with awareness of unexpected, Zheng’s works have close relationship with then social condition and high attention to humanism. In particular, Zheng’s works have unique reflection on intellectuals’spiritual world and show deep understanding of common people. Zheng has been keeping on writing dramas for the common people.As the main body of the article, the third part explores the dramaticism of Zheng’s works. Firstly, this part explains the different understanding of dramaticism between Eastern and Western world and highlighted the expression of characters’ passion. Secondly, this part investigates the external and internal dramaticism showing Zheng’s skills in writing plays and characters’dilemma as well as his understandings on humanism, respectively. Lastly, Zheng improved the feasibility of his works for theater performance via adding natural and marvelous banter.
