| Ji Xianlin(1911. 8. 2—2009. 7. 11), styled himself Xibu, and also Qizang. He is afamous Chinese Orientalist, expert in ancient writing, educationist and translator. JiXianlin had a thorough knowledge of both western and Chinese learning andabundant writings.His studies focused mainly on the multinational word language andorientalism, and cultural exchanges. Ji Xianlin’s works on literature don’t take up abig proportion of all his studies; however, they cannot be ignored.“Complementationof western and eastern cultures”is the foundation of Ji Xianlin’s literary thought andalso the spirit throughout his learning. For a long time, Ji Xianlin is admired by theworld for his identity as expert in orientalism and language and words, whichconceals his achievements in literary research, literary theory and aesthetic ideology.Based on the differences in western and eastern cultures, Ji Xianlinproposed that we should understand the traditional Chinese literary theory and the realvalue of aesthetics from a new perspective and that Chinese scholars should be boldand independent in discipline construction to realize equality with western academia.This proposal was macroscopic and comparable in terms of methodology and culturaland national in terms of axiology. To consider the development of Chinese literatureand aesthetics with the view of development is the contribution long-termdevelopment Ji Xianlin has made to Chinese culture.In the new historical period, overall understanding and compressive evaluationof Ji Xianlin’s literary and aesthetic ideology is significant for the development andextension of the development of current literature and aesthetics.
