Degree adverbs modifying nouns(DAMN) from a very early has attracted theattention of scholars.The scholars to study this phenomenon is very fine,especially from the point of view of semantics of DAMN ’s rationality, possibility.They demonstrate that DAMN’s basis is the semantic aspects of support. To sumup, DAMN’s basic language, speech production is the main focus, which is closelyrelated with the comprehension of discourse is not enough to study. Thephenomenon of DAMN in people’s verbal communication has a strong vitality,creativity, but our grammar specification has not recognized the legitimacy of it.For the substandard and epidemic of inconsistencies between the phenomenon,we will make a more reasonable explanation.This article will study DAMN in the frame of speech communication, in favorof language in communicative activities play a very important role in humancommunication, but also the factors of people should not be ignored. The successof communication depends on whether the the speaker’s expression is clear,organized, correct or not, but the hearer’s understanding is also important.Studying of verbal communication not only need to consider the language syntax,semantics and other factors, also need to pay attention to the factors of people; notonly to the speaker’s output, but also to the hearer’s comprehension.This paper differs from the previous study,we use new communication modeas the research platform, changing the past too much attention to speechproduction research perspective.In order to interpretate the inconsistenciesbetween the substandard and epidemic of DAMN more reasonable, we explore theimportance of hearer’s understanding in communicative success. Our main use ofSperber and Wilson’s relevance theory to the study of degree adverbs modifyingnouns. This theory of pragmatics research focus from discourse generation todiscourse understanding, thinks that language communication is a cognitive--thereasoning process of mutual manifestness, advocates Express--inferentialcommunication mode, emphasizes the importance of contextual factors incommunication. They think that the successful communication must rely onrelevance, attached to the hearer’s inference and contextual information indiscourse comprehension, propose that communication is the speakers andhearers’ cognitive context to achieve optimal relevance.We expect the conclusion is: the DAMN is not available a grammarspecification, but in social life is popular, the main reason lies in: the vigor ofDAMN comes from a successful communication, communicative success lies notonly in that the speaker clearly stated, language syntax, semantic characteristics,absolutely not be ignored is the hearer’s context knowledge, reasoning ability.
