Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs)were among the initially targeted12persistent organic pollutants of Stockholm convention.Because of the similar chemical and physical properties, as well as the toxicity, asPCDD/Fs, polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans(PBDFs) have been considered as the candidate POPs. The increasingly ecosystem andhealth risks have been piling up by these persistent compounds–PBDD/Fs, which begin tobring up great concern over their environmental problems in the environmental science.Although the magnificent importance has been well recognized, there are yet only fewstudies of PBDD/Fs reported in the Chinese literature. Up to date, there is no standardanalytical procedure for PBDD/Fs around the world. Further researches were expected tocarry out!In this study, co-analysis method of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs with isotope dilution highresolution gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-HRMS) wasbuilt up, which was also applied in the measurement of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs in seriesof environment samples sequently. The main contents were list as below:1. The same-sample determination protocols including sampling, extraction,clean-up and instrument analysis of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs based on isotope dilutionHRGC/HRMS method were developed and validated.2. Ambient atmosphere and soil samples were collected from the proximity of atypical municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) in order to quantify the occurrences anddistribution characters of PBDD/Fs based on the previous study on the co-analysis method. No remarkable PBDD/Fs were found, with almost most were below the limitation ofdetection (LOD), showing that the negative influence imposed on the ambient environmentby the emissions of PBDD/Fs from this MSWI was at a low level.3. Taking three municipal solid waste treatment plants (a landfill plant, a small-scaleincineration plant and a large-scale incineration plant) into account, the concentrations andI-TEQ levels of PCDD/Fs in both atmosphere and soil samples were accurately monitoredby using the established co-analysis method. Comparison of PCDD/F concentrations in thisstudy with the globally reported values showed that they were at relatively low levels, suggesting moderate influences of municipal solid waste treatment plants on thesurrounding environments. Comprehensive investigations on the congener profiles led tothe results that low chlorinated congeners were the primary contributors to the total toxic equivalents, while the high chlorinated ones accounted for the most of total concentrationlevels.
