Yu Wuyan(1900-1963), formerly known as Yu Yuming, and his alias is Buping. He was born in Yilin in Funing of Jiangsu Province and graduated from Huaian Senior elementary school and then learned to read Confucian classics. When he was young, he learned medicine from his father, named Fengxian, one of the three famous doctors in northern Jiangsu Province in the late Qing Dynasty, who wrote "compilation of medical experience" and was good at calligraphy. In the meantime, Yu studied classic medical books, read classic works of many famous doctors, so that he made his skills and medical knowledge professional and prominent. He cured lots of difficult miscellaneous diseases and cold strike, warm diseases. Because of his preference to classic prescriptions, he often used gypsum, Rheum palmatum L. when treating cold strike and warm diseases. Based on pattern identification and careful inspection, he used large amount of gypsum and Rheum palmatum L. and it was fairly effective. Consequently, many people called him "Mr. Gypsum" or "Mr. Rheum palmatum L.".Due to his living times, Mr. Yu left only a little works which leads to little studies and summaries of his academic thought. The features of his purgation were curing of many diseases and large scale of application. Among the diseases he cured, most of them were critical diseases. When using purgation, there were fixed prescriptions, in which methods of warm and cold, moisten and dry, heat purification, fire purging, fluid increasing, blood cooling, qi moving, water down-bearing, accumulation clearance, stagnation transforming, pungent diffusion and nourishing were combined. It achieved outstanding effect in treating stagnated chest, typhus, acne, fox-like diseases, food strike, trembling, spasm syndrome, qi stagnation, food stagnation, dry pattern, heat pattern, postpartum dry pattern, postpartum heat pattern, phlegm fire with mania, cold dampness with abdominal pain, intestinal bleeding due to cold strike and ulcer toxin, and these enlarged it’s application scale.According to the study of Mr. Yu’s medical cases and medical analysis, we can conclude his characteristics in using the purgation method:1. various and large scale of diseases treating2.mainly used in critical diseases3.using it with fixed prescription. In the dosage of Rheum palmatum L., the least was2g, the most was100g, and it was often co-used with large dosage of gypsum to strength its heat purification function. Besides, he stressed that "Zhongjing’s medical book laid emphasis on syndrome, and he made treating methods according to syndromes, and made prescriptions according to methods. Zhongjing used different medicines based on syndrome development in the course of treatment. We can see from Mr. Yu’s medical case analysis that he made the prescriptions so rigorously that they perfectly aimed at the syndromes, tongue fur and pulse manifestations. He did made his methods based on syndromes and prescriptions on methods.Studying his medical cases, we found most of the diseases were critical or difficult miscellaneous diseases, and they were cured effectively because he could identify the patterns and was good at purgation methods. As for difficult miscellaneous diseases, purgation can remove blood stasis and water retention, thus saving the patients instantly and effectively. Today, Chinese medicine is mainly concerned with chronic diseases and less with acute and critical diseases. Moreover, Chinese medicine doctors tend to protect themselves. All this lead to less application and study on purgation which can easily damage healthy qi. Therefore, succession and study to Yu’s purgation experiences is a kind of persistence of clinical Chinese medicine. This study is a systematic summary of Yu’s purgation experience and lays the foundation for his academic thought study.
