The author of Ji Yan Fang is Yao Sengyuan who was a famous doctor in the Northern Zhou Dynasty. The book was compiled on the basis of accumulations of years of clinical experiences, collections of singularities and comparisons of the effects of all kinds of therapeutic methods. The book encompassed many clinical departments illness, which has a certain academic status and was as famous as Zhang Zhongjing’s in the history. After checking the relevant researches about the book and the author in the past30years, we found that the systematic study of the book and the author is still little.Firstly, this thesis will help us to understand the life experiences of the Yao through checking the biography of Yao Sengyuan in Zhou Shu. Secondly, based on the bibliographic records of Ji Yan Fang which were collected from12bibliographies, we can understand the spread and lost of this book. Thirdly, by classifying and analyzing the contents of Ji Yan Fang which were recorded in Ishinpo, we will find out the characteristics of this record, as well as the original content and features of this book. Finally, the contents of Ji Yan Fang, Zhang Zhongjing’s books and Xiao Ping Fang, will be compared to analysis of the relationships between them.1. Yao Sengyuan and Ji Yan FangAccording to the records of Years of birth and death of Emperor Liang Wu, Prince Zhao Ming and North Zhou Jingdi, we can infer that Yao Sengyuan was born in499. He went through four dynasties and nine Kings, and had22official positions in Liang, Northern Zhou, Sui dynasties. There are some specific position, but most of the official positions are also virtual level. But there are many medical cases recorded in the biography of Yao Sengyuan, Which reflects his super medical skills.Based on the bibliographic records of Ji Yan Fang which were collected from12bibliographies, we can know that the book has12volumes at the beginning of writing completed. In the spreading process, there have been10volumes and12volumes of two kinds of this book. There are no relevant records of Ji Yan Fang in bibliographic books of the Southern Song Dynasty. We can infer that this book maybe lost in the Southern Song Dynasty.According to the bibliographic record in Japan’s bibliographies, which show that the book had spread to Japan,12volumes.2.The General Situation About the Contents of Ji Yan Fang Recorded in Ishinpo The number of Ishinpo directly reference the provisions of Ji Yan Fang was143, and48indirectly reference. Should be noted that:there are two provisions in volume28are identical with the contents of the provisions in volume20.In directly reference, the form of a disease corresponds to a treatment is the most common, about two-thirds. In indirectly reference, the form of double small print note, is the most common, about more than half.The contents of Ji Yan Fang were distributed in25of the30-volume Ishinpo.3. the Contents of Ji Yan Fang Recorded in IshinpoThe contents are divided into two parts of theoretical explanations and the treatments. In accordance with the classification of diseases in Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun, there are51kinds of diseases,137kinds of Syndromes, and the other5kinds of diseases.bases on this, we can know this book reproduces as many as the types of diseases. In addition, the book has collected some of the less scientific content.By classifying and analyzing the contents of Ji Yan Fang which were recorded in Ishinpo, we will summary of the characteristics of this book. Firstly, the content focus on practical, a little theoretical. Secondly, a disease corresponds to some kinds of treatments. Thirdly, there are a large number of folk prescriptions. And the composition of herbals in traditional medical formulae is refined. Forthly, some prescriptions follow the examples of ancient traditional medical formulae. Finally, there are many types of formulations, the power were used commonly.4. DiscussBy comparing the contents of Ji Yan Fang with the contents of Zhang Zhongjing’s books, we can infer that when Yao Sengyuan wrote the book, he maybe reference Zhang Zhongjing’s medical books.By comparing the contents of Ji Yan Fang with the content of Xiao Ping Fang, we can infer that some contents of this two books maybe had the same sources.
