Objective Malignant pleural effusion is a difficult problem in clinical therapy. Research on the recent curative effect and side effect of colloidal P and/or p53gene for the treatment of malignant pleural effusion induced by lung cancer. To explore a better therapeutic means.Materials and methods65patients diagnosed as lung cancer with single side malignant pleural effusion, were randomly divided into3groups. A chest darin(central venous catheter) was inserted in all patients with B-ultrasound localization.The administration was perfomred when the chest cavity was drained as completely as possible.The patients of group A were treated by recombinant adenovirus p53injection (rAD-p53) combined with colloidal chromic phosphate32P (colloidal32P), The patients of group B were treated by colloidal32P, The patients of group C were treated by recombinant rAD-p53Effects were observed after one month.The patients without complete remission were repeated again,the therapeutic effects were evaluated after2courses.Results The total effective rate(CR+PR) was81.8%(18/22) in group A and52.4%(11/21) in group B and40.9%(9/22) in group C. There was no significant difference between group B and C (χ2=0.57, P>0.05), however, there was significant difference between A and2other groups (χ2were4.24and7.77respectively, P<0.05). There were no significant complications such as pneumatothorax or pulmonary edema after the procedure in any of all patients. The therapeutic courses were not ceased dure to acute toxicities in both groups.The main side-effects were self-limited fever,nausea and vomiting.The toxicity was able to tolerable.Conclusions The effect of individual use of colloidal32P or rAd-p53for the treatment of malignant pleural effusion induced by lung cancer was limited,the combination of both could effectively control pleural effusion induced by lung cancer,mitigate the disease process and improve the life quality of the patients.
