In today’s consumer market, most are battery-operated portable electronic devices such as cellular phones, wireless router ect. Power management integrated circuits can improve battery efficiency, system runtime such as switch mode power supply (SMPS)、low dropout linear regulator (LDO). System on a chip (Soc) which contains RF function commonly have multimode, such as normal mode、sleep mode、stand by mode. In order to be high efficient at all the operation mode, it always needs power management circuits keep high efficiency at all the load current conditions, especially at light load current condition. This paper proposes a multimode buck SMPS with high efficiency at all the load current conditions base on the project of the company. At heavy load current, pulse width modulation (PWM) provides the high efficiency and small ripple voltage which fills RF system’s needs. At light load current, pulse skip modulation (PSM), minimum the unnecessary switch loss to provide efficiency but with a larger ripple voltage, this larger ripple voltage will not cause important impact on system because RF system steps into sleep mode. This paper also proposes another technology which is dynamic power transistor sizing that can improve the efficiency and load condition senses、encode principle. This design implemented by SMIC0.13um RF CMOS process. The project specifications the methods and steps of the SMPS system design、sublock’s specification are all in details. Some simulation results test and verify the correctness of design. The final system simulation results (above90%efficiency) indicate that this design fills the requirements of the project.
