The Characteristics Of The Installation Art And The Diversity Of Materials

Art reflects the changes that come with the passing of time. Over time, artistic expression has been changing rapidly into uncontrollably complex and diverse aspects, and thus, artists now require new experimental thinking and innovative ways of expression. Amid this diversification of art, installation art has increasingly expanded its territory. This trend has dramatically changed the perspective of looking at subjects in visual arts. In other words, visual arts, which formally took place in small spaces, are now expanding into wider spaces. Installation art, in terms of space, structures the area by placing objects in a given space, and the art piece is completed through the various relationship shared between the objects and the space they are in. Therefore, installation art has developed into a form of total art that puts emphasis on the overall image expressed by a whole structured space rather than the meaning of individual objects.Characteristically, installation art implies disposability, variability, and space. With the installation of objects, it also encourages the audience to actively engage the artwork. The effort to blend the concept of time and space by sublimating human life and its environment into a form of art is evident in installation art. The most basic characteristic of installation art is the employment of objects. Object employment in installation art has continuously evolved bringing it great diversity in materials. Not only does installation art show more variety in materials than any other art forms in contemporary art, but it has developed into many different forms going beyond the limits of frames and pedestals. In addition, the acceptance of performing arts and science&technology has reinvigorated art and has further extended our experience. Ultimately, the significance of installation art lies in ’the concept of expanded art’In the process of this research, I’m seeking to find an overall understanding of installation art and its potentials for exhibiting something completely new by focusing on the characteristics and diversity of materials it possesses.
