Polycarbonate (PC) has excellent mechanical strength, particularly impact strength, goodelectrical properties, transparency and is widely utilized in a variety of fields of officemachinery, electric and electronic machinery, automobiles, architecture and the like. PCexhibits excellent thermal stability and certain extent flame retardancy. The LOI values of thevirgin PC ranges from21%to24%according to the different grafting degree, and achievesUL-94V-2rating. Although PC is self-extinguishing, a PC composition with flame retardantis required in many applications. For environment and safety considerations, halogen-free flame retardant has become thefocus in related fields. The organic-sulphate flame retardant (SFR), because of its highefficiency with low loading and environmental friendliness, has drawn researcher’s attention. In this thesis, three SFRs were synthesized using potassium2-aminobenzene-1,4-disulfonate, potassium4-aminobenzenesulfonate, potassium2-aminoethanesulfonate and1,3,5-trichloro-2,4,6-triazine as starting materials, respectively. Their chemical structures wereconfirmed by FTIR, MS and1H-NMR. The thermal stability of the prepared SFRs wasstudied by the thermal gravimetrical analysis (TGA) under air and nitrogen atmosphere.SFRs were blended with polycarbonate (PC) to prepare a series of hybrids of flameretardant PC/SFR. The properties of the PC/SFRs flame-retardant systems, including flameretardancy, thermostability, flammability and mechanical properties, were investigated indifferent additions of SFR. The thermal degradation behavior and flame retardancy of thosehybrids were discussed based on thermogenic analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI),vertical burning test (UL-94), and cone calorimeter experiment. The results showed that theLOI values significantly increased (all above30%) with the dosage of SFRs range from0.6%to1.0%. The thermal degradation temperature of PC was decreased, but the char residueschanged unobviously and the UL-94rating of those hybrids achieved V-0. The time of theP-HRR was delayed about70seconds compared with that of Virgin PC. Addition of SFRs affect Izod impact strength of PC/SFR system, and the Izod impact strength of those hybridsdecreased with the increase usage of the SFRs. With the increase addition of the SFRs, theflexural strength and tensile strength of the PC/SFR system increase firstly and then decrease, and the maximum strength was achieved as the dosage of the SFRs was0.1%.
