As an important engineering material in national economy, protective material was coated on the base metals or electronic components, played an important role in protecting against corrosion, moisture and mildew. Poly (p-phenyl vinyl)(PPV) material has attracted more and more attention for their advantages such as good processability, great dielectric properties, excellent electrical properties and anti-wear ability.The research progress of the protective coating material was reviewed, whose protection and failure mechanisms were also described. The development of PPV material was summarized and the polymerization mechanism of film formation was introduced. On this basis, a chlorinated PPV material was designed and synthesized with a total yield up to21%. The structure of the molecular had been characterized by1H-NMR, IR and elemental analysis method, respectively.Its melting point was161.9℃, TGA testing showed that Td (decomposition temperature) of the polymer film was159.98℃; The purity tested by high performance liquid chromatography analysis was97.19%; Further tests showed that the resistivity was2.59×1015Ω-cm, the dielectric constant was2.96, the dielectric loss was0.0026, and it showed low temperature resistance and had an excellent resistance to temperature shock, acid resistance and resistance to organic solvents. As a protective material, PPV had shown significant social and economic benefits.
