Color polymer microspheres are functional composites incorporated colorants in a certain manner. It has an extensive application in many fields, such as medical immunology, biological labeling, electronic inks, and paint industry. In the present study, two methods were used to prepare color polymer microspheres. color P(St-co-MMA) microspheres that encapsulated C.I. Pigment Yellow74were synthesized by suspension polymerization and, P(St-co-AA) and P(St-co-MAA) microspheres synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization were dyeing with disperse dyes. The influences of stirring rate and ultrasonic condition to synthesize color P(St-co-MMA) microspheres were studied in suspension polymerization and, the effect of dyeing temperature and dye dosage to prepare color P(St-co-AA) microspheres or color P(St-co-MAA) microspheres were also studied. The experimental results shown that the particle size of color P(St-co-MMA) microspheres synthesized by suspension polymerization was from hundred microns to ten microns and, presented polydispersity. Under a certain condition, greater ultrasonic power, longer ultrasonic time and faster stirring rate resulted smaller particle size of which the minimum was below ten microns. P(St-co-AA) and P(St-co-MAA) microspheres synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization presented great monodispersity. The average particle size of P(St-co-AA) microspheres was375nm and that of P(St-co-MAA) microspheres was260nm. The polymer emulsion dyed with disperse dyes had excellent chromaticity and bright color. High uptakes were obtained from color P(St-co-AA) microspheres prepared by dyeing with disperse dyes and, the dye uptakes of the three disperse dyes were92.71%,80.89%and87.25%for disperse red FB, disperse yellow E-GL and disperse blue2BLN, respectively.
