Lighting has extended to the field of non-visual biological effects. More and more about the relationship between light and health has been found. At the same time, LED called a new light source, performs better than the traditional ones. It has more and more obvious advantages. LED’s performance is quite different from the traditional light sources because its own factors. People pay more and more attention on the problems of health when LED gives so many excellent features.This paper summarizes human eye’s structure, visual factors, and visual channels under different lighting conditions. In addition, this paper summarizes the classic literature of the non-visual biological effects, analyzes and compares the two main evaluation methods-one based on melatonin inhibition and the other one based on the pupil size. At the same time, the biological structure and neural pathways are sorted and compared, which are the physiological basis of non-visual biological effects.This paper has two main aspects. The first one is to find other physiological parameter besides melatonin and pupil size, which can characterize the non-visual biological effects with the different lighting conditions. In experiments, the heart rates of24subjects (18young people,6old people) are recorded under different colorful lighting conditions. The results suggest that even the color light under low illuminance conditions can show biological effects on the subjects, the heart rate changes are significantly different among four conditions. The evaluation of heart rate and the other parameters associated with non-visual biological effects, is of great significance to improve the photometric evaluation system. The second part is the summary of possible existing light security risks after the study of literature and regulations, and designing a light damage measurement instrument based on pupil size to improve the accuracy of the light hazard measurement.This thesis based on the existing experimental conditions, analyzes the heart rate in non-visual biological effects experiments, providing some theoretical basis to improve the photometric evaluation. I hope in the future, based on visual and non-visual evaluation, healthy lighting with less energy can come true.
