Electromagnetic Metamaterials has become one of the most important discoveries of Physics and electromagnetism in this century. At present,metamaterial has garnered considerable attentions all over the world dueing to the enormous potential of its basic theory and practical application.The Metamaterials breakthroughed a number of important concepts of the traditional electromagnetic theory, the research results will be widely used in many important areas,such as communications and microwave devices.Metamaterials are generally composed of subwavelength resonant unit cells mimicking the response of molecules or atoms to electromagnetic waves. The typical metamaterial are structured by Split-Ring Resonators(SRRs) and Electric-Field-Coupled inductance capacitance resonator(ELC), which are inspired by magnetic and electric fields, respectively. The responses of SRR and ELC are often characterized by effective medium parameters, i.e. the electric permittivity and the magnetic permeability. One of the commonly adopted approaches to determine such parameters is to compare the calculated or measured transmission and reflection coefficients of a metamaterial slab with a certain thickness to the analytical expression of a homogeneous slab of the same thickness.The electromagnetic property of these kinds of materials depends on the structure of the unit cell and arrangement of the cells.Through change these key parameters, we designed three typical electromagnetic Metamaterials and their complementary models. This paper studied the S parameters of the complementary model and verified its complementary in physics. By using effective medium theory and rigorous mathematical derivation, the physical models and the parameter-extraction mathematical models of resonance-type metamaterials’structural units have been established, Then the characteristics and construction methods of those units have been investigated in detail, the electromagnetic parameters of composite structures have been successfully extracted from scattering prameters based on the established mathematical-physical models of metamaterials’ structural units. Then further study about the physial meaning of negative permittivity and negative permeability has been done based on the extraction results, we have a correlation of electromagnetic parameters and identify the key elements of its operating frequency by electromagnetic simulation, such as HFSS(based on Finite Element Method) and CST(based on Finite Integration Method), which can get special electromagnetism in some frequencies and discuss the results, besides,metamaterials have been tested by waveguide flange. Therefore, the metamaterials research has a important reference value in artificial electromagnetic theory.and engineering design.
