Abstract/Summary:
As an important part of higher education, Higher Vocational-technical Education (HVTE) has drawn more and more attention of the country. One of the basic principles of our country’s Higher Vocational-technical Education is practicability, and of course, HVTE English teaching is no exception. According to the Basic Requirements for HVTE English Teaching, HVTE English teaching should integrate the cultivation of the language ability and the development of actual intercultural communicative ability in order to meet the requirements of the21st century development to higher vocational talents. With the deepening of economic globalization, multinational corporations have swarmed into China in large quantities. More and more higher vocational college graduates get a position in multinational companies, and also have the opportunity to participate in a series of intercultural communicative activities, most of which take place in China. For lack of the ability to introduce Chinese culture in English, most of higher vocational college graduates have difficulties in expressing Chinese unique items, causing unsuccessful cross-cultural communications and not being able to spreading their own culture. In some ways, the cultivation of the students in higher vocational college over the years has not met the basic requirements for HVTE English teaching. This study is intended to understand the situation of Chinese culture aphasia (CCA) among higher vocational college students as well as its causes. Besides, it tries to verify the effectiveness of integrating China English into HVTE English teaching and then figure out the possible ways of strengthening Chinese culture teaching.100students from International Trade major and Engineering Measurement major of Anhui Industry Polytechnic and40English teachers from Anhui Industry polytechnic and Tongling Vocational and Technical College were chosen as the subjects in the study. Tests and questionnaires are employed in this study. It is found that CCA exsits prevalently among Vocational College students. To reduce the CCA, supported by the theory of Input Hypothesis by Krashen, the author conducts a two-term empirical study of integrating China English with HVTE English teaching. According to this study, experimental comparison teaching is conducted between the experimental class (EC), and the control class (CC). In daily teaching of the EC, the teacher conducts China English teaching in various kinds of ways, while in the teaching of CC, the teacher does not specially give similar input of China English, but only distributes the same teaching materials for their self-study. Three tests were given to the subjects both from the EC and the CC at the beginning, middle and end of the experiment to check their mastery of China English. The comparison of test results of the two classes show that the ability of students in EC to express Chinese items in English has been greatly improved, not only in written English but also in spoken English, while students of CC achieve very little in their self-study of China English. Therefore, the effectiveness of integrating China English with HVTE English teaching has been confirmed. Moreover, a questionnaire for college students is designed to check students’ feeling and attitude towards China English, the importance of Chinese culture, the difficulties in their learning normal expressions of Chinese culture and the significance of teaching Chinese culture. The other questionnaire for college teachers aims to find teachers’ opinion about their difficulties in conducting Chinese culture teaching and their suggestions to strengthen Chinese culture. Based on their responses to the questionnaires, related factors which can be the difficulties in Chinese culture teaching practice and some suggested measures to strengthen Chinese culture teaching are summarized such as compiling special textbooks of Chinese culture, upgrading the quality of teachers, increasing the content of Chinese culture in English tests and readjustment of course design. At the end of the experiment, face to face talks with5English teachers, the teaching age of whom is ranging from5to30, offered valuable suggested measures to strengthen Chinese culture teaching. In a word, China English is of great significance to students’cultivation of cross-cultural competence. This thesis suggests some teaching measures on the basis of the study, hoping to arouse more attention in the field of HVTE English teaching and facilitate the improvement of higher vocational college students’expressiveness of Chinese culture in English.
