Study On The Post-Modernism Thoughts Of David Ray Griffin

Post-modernism is the most influential contemporary western cultural trend, which proposes many issues—concerning human existence and development—that need to be settled urgently. Domestic scholars who commit themselves to post-modernism research have achieved fruitful results. Among many diverse representatives of post-modernism scholars, David Ray Griffin from the U.S., the important representative of constructive post-modernism, is one of the most outstanding philosophers.This thesis will start with the connotation of constructive post-modernism and do deep analysis on constructive post-modernism thoughts of David Ray Griffin, who does not advocate for completely destroying the world view and values that modernism praises highly. Meanwhile, the thesis will focus on the constructive post-modernism thoughts and theory system of David Ray Griffin. The system consists of three parts: view on religion, view on science, view on human beings. In the opinion of David Ray Griffin, various traditional religions are not opposite or incompatible as fire and water. In contrast, different religions can learn from each other and promote each other. He believes that religion is a diverse system. As for his view on science, he maintains that organism and science of post-modernism should be integrated. Science of post-modernism should get rid of reductionism and mechanism. It should center on organism and holism. David Ray Griffin’s view on human beings is against the extreme individualism. David Ray Griffin advocates for harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, emphasizes creation of humanity. He holds that creation is the most worth admiring and worshipping and a very important aspect of humanity. He thinks that humans are interdependent and so are males and females. The relations between two sexes are of vital importance to the development of humanity.David Ray Griffin’s constructive post-modernism transcends modernism and deconstructionism, repudiation and destruction, and makes for rectification and construction. He advocates creative spirits not only in theory but also in personal practice. His constructive post-modernism will contribute to solving China’s religion contradiction, curbing environmental pollution, building harmonious society and realizing Chinese Dream.
