Counselor’s Verbal Response Models In Chinese Counseling Process

During a counseling process, counselor’s verbal responses play an very important role on the working alliance and counseling’s outcome. Researches about counselor’s verbal responses began at1960s and1970s in foreign countries, and have become more and more completed nowadays. However, these researches were mostly based on English, and whether those results can also be used on Chinese counseling is still a question.In this study, the researcher translated one of the most popular verbal responses model "Helping Skills System" which is found by professor Hill. And asked3judges put counselor’s verbal responses into the Chinese version. The counselor’s responses came from10counseling sets and in which the counselors using Chinese. The result shows that:(1) the model’s Chinese version has high Kappa consistency among3judges which indicates that the model matches Chinese counseling well.(2) counselor who are psychoanalysis or cognitive behavior therapy orientation have no big different on verbal responses. Closed question and Restatement are the top two kinds all counselors use most frequently. However, they have different uses in psychoanalysis and cognitive behavior therapy. In a sand play counseling process, counselor use little kinds of responses, such like Closed question and Restatement, and hardly saying other kind of sentences.(3) The Chinese version which is translated based on the meaning of words, have many problems on Chinese understanding and expression. Thus, the definition of the models in the Chinese version needs to be revised and replenished, and the examples in the model need to be replenished as well.
