What language is used in a sound film is a complex issue involving many aspects such as politics, culture, aesthetics and even economics. China is a multi-ethnic country with a long history, great regional differences and rich languages where both Mandarin Chinese and dialects are used at the same time, forming a polyphonic language/text community. Mandarin Chinese shoulders the mission of uniting culture while dialects maintain their own values and features. In the history of Chinese film, the tension relation between Mandarin and dialects exerts a profound impact on the form of Chinese films. Putonghua/Mandarin film, Cantonese film, dialect film, and minority language movies have contributed to form a multifarious Chinese film culture. The thesis<Mandarin and dialect:the politic and cultural logics behind the film languages> begins with the analysis of all kinds of articles about "language issues in Chinese films", especially on the knowledge value and practical significance of "cultural logics behind the film languages".
