The research is intended to analyze how the cooperative principle effects incommunication, through which reveals its directive function in drama translation Thecooperative principle interprets conversational association well, providing an effectiveway to digging hidden meaning in conversations. While bridging two languages andcultures, literature translation includes a lot of communication and transmission.Translation theorists such as Nida, Newmark from home and abroad have broughtforward many instructing principles on literature translation. However, as an importantpart of literature translation, drama translation has not received as much attention as othersub-kinds, latter of which flourish. Drama is different from other literature translation,because it is mostly made up of by dialogues and through communication revealcharacters’ personality under various circumstances. Its literariness and theatricalitymade it being instructed well by Grice’s Cooperative Principle.The thesis is going to conduct the research basically from two perspectives: On onehand, how Cooperative Principle effects in translation process concerning its goals,strategies and evaluations, etc, besides, how to apply Cooperative principle to achievepragmatic equivalence in translation so as to enable communication between originalauthor and translation reader. On the other hand, what the differences in differentlanguages and cultures are in terms of Cooperative Principle that are worth noticing, inwhich thoughts switches are concerned. In this thesis, several examples from translationsof Teahouse will be discussed while reflections of Cooperative Principle and deductionof conversational implicature in the translations will be emphasized from the angle of thefour maxims as well as translation strategies taken to achieve equivalent communicativeeffect in the circumstances of different languages and cultures. In addition, someconcepts such as cohesion and coherence, social cultural context are also referred to.
