The improvement of English reading of high vocational college students is animportant and difficult subject in English teaching. There are a big number ofmethods to improve high vocational students’ self-1earning ability. One of them ismaking use of modern multimedia technology to improve self-learning in Englishreading course. And it is popular and effective.Taking advantage of multimedia teaching based on the information technologyis widely employed within English courses. It has methodological foundation and itemphasizes the subjectivity and personality of students. It involves teaching ideas,teaching resources, teaching procedures, learning strategies and learning styles and soon. So it contributes to the improvement of self-learning ability of students. In thepractical reading courses, various self-learning modules are employed. The learningresults vary from different teaching methods and learning efforts.As taking advantage of multimedia facilities, it is important to use effectivestrategies to improve high vocational college students’ self-learning. First, both of theteachers and students should change their roles. Second, it is necessary to developeffective learning strategies. Third, teachers should guide the students to combine theself-learning and multimedia facilities in an effective way.In this paper, the author conducts several study methods, tests, questionnairesand interviews and finally comes to the conclusion that taking advantage ofmultimedia teaching method has an effective impact upon students’ English readingability. It makes students to be the key role of the learning procedure and makes themmore active and more independent in English learning. So it is effective in improvingtheir English reading ability. But of course there are deficiencies and shortcomings in this new kind of English reading teaching mode, so researchers have to devote effortto it and make further exploration.
