A Probe Into The Characteristics Of Translation Ethics In The Buddhist Scripture Translation

The concept of translation ethics was firstly put forward by French translationscholar and translator, Antoine Berman in1984，which soon evoked a strong responsein western translation circle. The “Ethical Turn” subsequently took place. More andmore western scholars devoted to the study of it to find out the actually effective andvalid theoretical guidelines for translating practice. However, in China, the studies ontranslation ethics were mainly based on the introductions to foreign achievements ontranslation ethics. But there are also some scholars who base their study on theChinese cultural and historical background, and are making a constant attempt on thediscussion of the definition of ethics and translation ethics.The Buddhist Scripture Translation lasting from the Eastern Han to the earlyyears of the Northern Song holds a very important position in Chinese traditionaltranslation movements. In this thesis, the author plans to analyze and then summarizesome characteristics of translation ethics in the Buddhist Scripture Translation.In this thesis, some other key concepts such as, the main features of modernwestern translation ethics, the exact cultural background of China when eachtranslation movement took place, the influences of traditional Chinese cultures ontranslating acts as well as some outstanding translators and the exact translatingstrategies adopted by them, etc. will be discussed.
