When the history of Western art paced into the end of the nineteenth Century,Post-impressionism emerged as the times required. The painters abandoned thereproduction of the objective natural painting style since the Renaissance. In the creationprocess of emphasis on the natural subjective feelings, putting personal view of art intopractice, the imitation of nature is no longer the primary task of a painter. They soughtplane effect of the picture, and strengthened the overall sense of the screen by emphasizingthe picture of each component. In painting, lines become indispensable visual elements oftheir images. The lines in the oil painting of Post-Impressionism showed characteristicsdifferent from the past. The role of lines has been beyond the basic function of simple shape.They have run into a stage of cohesion of the artist’s emotion and ideal through their owndevelopment to form the expressive force. The painters of Post-Impressionism drew richnutrition of previous painting to give lines a new form, and created a space for sustainabledevelopment for future generations.The article is divided into four chapters to discuss the painting line ofPost-Impressionism through comprehensive, analysis, comparison, example illustration andso on. The first chapter outlines the general functions of the oil painting line and brieflystates the development of line in the western history of art evolution process, to enhance theunderstanding of line in western painting. The second chapter interprets the formationprocess of the respective and the links and differences between Impressionism andPost-impressionism, to explain why the lines become necessary visual elements of Post-Impressionism. The third chapter is tightly connected with the second chapter. In reasoningof the second chapter, it elaborates unique personal line style of post-Impressionist paintersand the profound connotation of the spirit, and deeply analyses different inspirations ofcharacteristics of the line in Oriental Art on the Post-impressionist painters. The fourthchapter analyses the influence by the different Post-impressionist painter line style on laterartists and schools. Finally, a brief summary is done to the full text.
