Brancusi is one of the most important sculptors of the20th century. He had a broad impact on the development of modern sculpture, inspired a generation of sculptors such as Jean Arp, Henry Spencer Moore and Barbara Hepworth, enriched the formal language of modernist sculpture, updated sculpturing, and caused the concern of the material and the plinth. Mademoiselle Pogany is not only the most representative of the characteristics of his art works, but also a milestone in his artistic development. This work reflects the Brancusi’s art features and aesthetic concepts, and marks the new depth in his exploring for essence. In this paper based on Mademoiselle Pogany series statues, we will combine the iconography and the analysis of formal language, overview the creative background, and analyze the work’s features in his shape, material and plinth, for the purpose of revealing the Brancusi’s artistic essence. Through this research, I hope to enter the context of modern sculpture reviews and enrich the case studies of art history. At the same time, it is intended to cultivate my own vision of the problem in order to improve my ability to resolve practical problems.
