As a historical figure, Wang Zhaojun herself and her Dees, attracted the attention of the men of literature and writing since the Han Dynasty, and formatted the theme. Since the Yuan Dynasty, there are a large number of performances in Chinese traditional opera reflecting the theme, and they constituted the Zhaojun theater, which have been lasted so long a time and still be popular and fresh in the history of Chinese traditional opera. In this paper, we focus on the character image of Zhaojun in the Zhaojun theater, which including ancient part and modern part, from the Yuan Dynasty when Zhaojun theater began to appear until now. We study on the transmutation of Zhaojun character image in Chinese traditional opera comprehensively in this paper.Factors effecting on the character image of Zhaojun, including the historical facts about herself and her Dees, the specific status of times when the theater works produced, the personal emotions and aesthetic tendency of the authors, the social psychology and aesthetic tendency of the audiences. These factors can’t be separated from each other. They are intertwined, and all play a role in the formation of Zhaojun character image. Through the transmutation of Zhaojun character image in Chinese traditional opera, we can learn that the creation of Chinese traditional opera shapes the same historical figure and views her Dees from different aspects and in different perspectives, reflects and serves the reality indirectly, and reflects the aesthetic concept and values of certain era.
