A Study On The Artistic Features Of Song Yu Fu

Song Yu is one of the important writers of the late Zhou Dynasty which active in the Chu court. His Fu (poetic essays) are very popular in the past dynasties. This paper is divided into four parts to show his artistic style and creative origin.The first part is a brief description of Song Yu’s life story and the background of his writing. In the late Zhou Dynasty, the State of Chu was on the wane. Under the threat of Qin, The King of Chu lost his fighting spirit, and indulged in the entertainment. That’s why Song Yu becoming a literature attendants.The second part is an introduction of Song Yu Fu. From the formal point of view, most of Song Yu Fu is look like an interesting dialogue between the monarch and courtiers. In his fifteen existing works, there are six themes involved:The first one is Qu Yuan’s fate and the dismal autumn; the second one is the entertainment life of the Chu court; the third one is the mysterious natural; the fourth one is the encounter with the beauty; the fifth one is the principle of running a country embedded in the games; the sixth one is the explanation for others’misunderstanding about him.The third part is a discussion of Song Yu’s writing features and artistic style. Song Yu is a key figure in the transition from the Fu in the style of Li Sao to the Fu in the style of prose, and he also is the first court writer which have works spread in the world. Because of this, his stylistic is not very stable, and some of the content of his Fu are learned from the previous writers. There are four kinds of style reflect in Song Yu’s works:First, praise highly on desolate things; second, prefer mysterious things; third, pursuit humorous; fourth, adhere to admonition.The last part is a study on Song Yu’s creative origin. There is a clear link between Song Yu Fu and The Classic of Mountains and Rivers, Chu Ci (the verse of Chu), Zoranzi and Strategies of the Warring States.
