A Japanese writer did a hara-kiri in the Ground Self-Defense Force base with asaber on November25,1970. He is Mishima Yukio. No words can express hiscomplex view of literature, aesthetics, philosophy of life and this did cause manydisputes. No matter he was alive or dead, he is the hot topic, people always talkabout. He is a fanatical militarism supporter, but in the conscription physicalexamination, he lied about illness to evade military service; he was a literator, but hethrew himself into the activity of physical transformation actively to haveSamurai quality.Although Mishima Yukio, unlike Oe Kenzaburo, his works containsexistentialism obviously, even directly indicate he had received existentialism and hisgraduation thesis is also about it. But Mishima Yukio lives at that time whenexistentialism is popular and Japan is the key east town of existentialism. MishimaYukio is difficult to keep his virtue, not being influenced by existentialism. We think, the existentialism unconsciously melted in Mishima Yukio works, and even his wholelife is practicing the existentialist concept. Mishima Yukio ’s existentialism has notbeen taken seriously in academia. The main reason lies in the the fog of MishimaYukio’s strong militaristic values and weird male body aesthetics which obscured thesightThis is to resurvey Mishima Yukio and his works from existentialism angle ofview. Mishima Yukio thinks that life is lonely; the world is absurd, the thought and theexistentialist outlook on life and world happen to hold the same view. Facing sorts ofabsurd worlds, how should life go on?Here involves the problem of existentialchoice. Existentialist pay great attention to make a choice, they think choices areanywhere, even human life is full of it. The absurd man has to choose a way to facethe absurd. And the results of such a choice, naturally, have to be borne by himself. That is, existentialism tells man must be responsible for their own choices.Besides, the Mishima Yukio’s aesthetics especially his later aesthetics are worthour exploration. sartre thinks beauty and evil are interlinked, while Mishima thinksthey are equal, which are just the two sides of the world; they coexist and act on thesame thing. This aesthetic together with sartre’s" Imagine" theory have different approaches but have equally satisfactory results precisely. |
