The division of liberal arts and the sciences remains one of the most controversialeducational debates. It also becomes a confusion and huge obstacle to the newcurriculum revamp in China. What behinds this issue is the fundamentals ofcurriculum theory: the judgments and answers to division or integration of disciplines.If we take a look at related researches, most of them are focused on pros and cons ofdivision or integration, or are practical researches on how student’s one specificcognitive ability related to either of two education methods. It is rare to see a researchthat lays its latitude beyond high school and expands to college level, combiningstatistical analysis with its way of research. Based on the observation of college study,this article examines influence of the two education methods on students’ academicperformance and their attitude toward study. Highlights of this article are as follows:Part1: Generalization and detailed reclassification of related researches, pinpointsevidences that support this article.Part2: Statistical analysis on the correlation of college admission exam scores ofstudents from both education methods and their academic scores in both major andnon-major studies, reveals the impact of two education methods on academicperformance in college.Part3: Results of questionnaires from college professors and students in regards totheir views in both education methods. In addition to the questionnaires, which maybe subject to sample size insufficiency, this part articulates subjective and objectiveinferences on the impact of two education methods on college students.Part4: Conclusion of previous3parts and the author’s opinions and suggestions ondivision or integration of disciplines.
