with the treaty ports founded, western medicine was introduced to China largely. As a heterogeneous culture which is different to traditional Chinese medicine from theory to practice, it stroke the Chinese society. In terms of medicine, the transmission of western medicine changed traditional Chinese medicine greatly on medical technology, system and doctor-patient relationship, and then people’s medical ideas.Take Shanghai for example, as the usefulness of Medicine and charity of missionary hospitals, etc. the low-income worker-class in Shanghai accepted western medicine earlier. The upper class who are knowledgeable, rich and respectable are relatively slow. On the whole of the data about seeking western medical service, people recognized and accepted the western medicine and formed new medical ideas.Influenced by the traditional culture, people recognized differently in different sphere. This article intended to introduce the typical cowpox, surgery and obstetrics from the ShenBao. The infectious and universal smallpox and the disadvantages of traditional variolation made people accept the cowpox in a large extent and recognise it more rationally, such as the advantages and disadvantages and time to vaccinate of the cowpox. However, in terms of the transient population in Shanghai we could not estimate the people’s vaccination too optimistic. People accepted western surgeon because of its fast and obvious effect and some creative treatment but reserved on amputation and anatomy. Considering the strict specification of gender, most of Chinese people only admire western obstetrics and don’t seek service from them. Woman’s production relates too much, so some people suggested change the customs, develope female education and train female doctors. At last, Shanghai built the first medical college integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine for female. Under the experiencing, comparison and introspection, people put some proposal for the revolution of the medicine field in China. For example, the medical system, education, hospital and medical exchange, and some of them had been put into effect.Western medicine as a part of Chinese modernization initiated the change of the society. Owing to the society, psychology, culture and etc. people’s reflection to western medicine experienced from suspicious, trial, soar and acculturation and this cource is also a miniature of the transition of modern Chinese society.
