Herzog is one of Saul Bellow’s works in his golden period of the creation. This fictionfocus on the mental state of people. The spiritual pillar of middle-class has been destroyed inthe inverted world. They feel confused and anxious, lost their balance, like a dangling man.The book reflects the contemporary social environment, which shows the state of humanexistence,and relate to the spiritual world.Herzog has complex spirit and rich knowledge, buthe lost himself. He lacked confidence in the social life and human relationship. However,after the long years of the spirit searching, Herzog recognize himself again, and re-examinethe relationship.So he find their own existence space, also understand the truly meaning oflife.This paper try to find out this question which is in the vulnerable corner of people, andhas universal significance----The mind breakthrough of people in the social life.First, this paper try to find out the reason of Herzog’s confusion and anxiety.I focus onHerzog’s identity confusion,analyse the lack of family,society,and nation;Then I seekHerzog’s complicated ideas and blue-sensitive character,to find the conflict between hisimagine life and real life.Secondly,see the lost of Herzog’s spirit in the case of socialcollapse.Thirdly,to seize this mediator of the letters, research Herzog’s valuesystem.Finally,find out the sublimation of cultural and religious psychological,try to seek aroad of breakthrough to get detached thinking and free spirit.
