| Ritual music and folk music are two sources of the Chinese music. Zhou Gong formulated rites and composed music to further promote the norm of etiquette, and used "ritual music" as an important measure to govern the country and enhance people’s allegiance. The state norm of etiquette moved down through culture into folk rites and customs, and the merge of ritual music and folk music was completed in the same process. Ceremonial music is an inheritance of ritual music and folk music. It is also an inheritance and development of great historical traditions. In the current rural society, ceremonial music exists due to its functional significance. It is played in the form of opera, drum and trumpet music, etc., and is closely linked with ceremonial activities such as wedding, funeral, three-year post-funeral memorial, ancestor worship, temple fair, business opening, etc.This essay chooses Jining district as the area for study. It reviews great historical traditions through the local ceremonial music, connects past with present, and associates ceremonial music with its historical and cultural background. In the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, Jining district was booming and flourishing because of canal transportation. So a large number of high level government officials were stationed here. In Ming dynasty, a branch of Prince Lu was stationed in Yanzhou prefecture, and the official residence of Confucius’descendants throughout the dynasties was also located in this area. The economic prosperity and the gathering of high level government official residences brought about abundant needs for ritual music and folk music, and provided opportunities for their preservation and development to date.Drum and trumpet music is popular in Jining district. In history, dram and trumpet music played a big role in ritual music. This area has a large number of drum and trumpet music Qupai (name of tunes), and many opera Qupai, especially Liuzi Opera Qupai. In history, the Liuzi Opera, featuring an official string music tune was one of the important operas in the state music system. It then became a branch of the "Dongliu Opera’", which is one of the four major operas with distinctive tunes in the Qing dynasty. The merge of the drum and trumpet music with the Liuzi Opera in this area reflects the interaction and integration of ritual music and folk music, as well as the influence of the rites and music, system upon ceremonial music.This essay combines the historical and culture background of the studied area with historical scenes, and individual cases with the overall situation. It intends to look through current regional ceremonial music to study the great historical traditions of China. |
