This project derives from the youth research project of the education departmentof Hunan Province——A Study of the Identification of Ceramics Design Based onthe Hunan cultural identity.(The research project number:07KZ/KZ02019). Culturaland natural diversities are equally important and it is a fundamental condition for theharmonious coexistence of society and nature. In the present times of political,economical and cultural globalization, traditional cultures of different times havebecome the hot topics of the society. The modern Chinese ceramics design is situatedin a deficiency of context, and the blind pursuit of western design culture has causedthe loss of the cultural features of the pottery of our own, and in the process ofregaining native culture is limited to the imitation of form of the traditionalimplements.This project is based on the research of the sociocultural ideologies and thepolitical and economic backgrounds which give rise to the appearance anddevelopment of implements of Hunan Province, and it summarizes the guidingprinciple of production in Hunan Province. This thesis utilizes the methodologies ofliterature research and social investigation to study the design characteristics and thepresent situation of the ceramics in Hunan Province, aiming to find the creativeapproaches of ceramics design in Hunan Province and attempting to utilize it in thepresent ceramics design.This dissertation conducts an in-depth study of the artistic features of the mosttypical implements and ceramics in Hunan culture from the perspective of productdesign, aiming to offer adequate evidences for the creative approaches ofculture-based ceramics design. This thesis proposes “the ideological framework ofHunan culture and modern design” and studies the exterior and interior factors indesign and production of the typical Hunan implements such as lacquer-work, bronzeware and bamboo ware and explores the functions, structures, shapes, decoratedmaterials and cultures traits from various levels and dimensions, with a systematicalconclusion. Meanwhile, the thesis studies the present situation of production and theartistic features of design of the undiscovered Changsha kiln and Liling Kiln, andexamines the problems of the design and development of the ceramics in Hunan.Guided by the Creation Ideology of Hunan, this thesis proposes that the correct way of ceramics design is the infiltration of “Dao” and the shape by “Qi”, and explores thecreative design approaches of ceramics in Hunan culture to utilize them in modernceramics design and development for the creation of ceramics and the industrialrevitalization in Hunan Province.Due to the limitation time and other objective conditions, the implements chosenin this dissertation are small in quantity, and some implements are not studied in acomprehensive way because of the lack of adequate evidences. In the followingresearch, it is proposed to expand the availability of samples and seek more evidencesto conduct a deep research in order to solve the difficult problems of how to inheritand develop traditional culture in modern design and propose a more consummate andconvincible development model.
