Chinese entertainment text messages (CETMs) refer to those created byprofessional text message writers and sent by group and further retransmittedbecause of their unique values. The purposes of these messages are to greet andcommunicate and bring pleasure to others. They are different from other commonspeeches used in daily life featuring with high duplicated frequency, rapid popularity, vast spread of transmission and great influence. They have gone through complexinformation procession thus they are concise and vivid, popular and humorous.CETMs attract scholars’ wide attention. The previous studies mainly focus onthe rhetoric and art aesthetics and expound their social and cultural roots, thehumorous effects and linguistic functions. However, few of them pay attention to thecognitive motivation of their structuring and the cognitive mechanism of theirinterpretation. So based on the theory of idealized cognitive models (ICMs), the presentresearch is to systematically study the underlying mechanism of the understanding ofCETMs’ coherence from the cognitive linguistics perspective. Through this study, the author hopes to provide a comparatively new viewpoint to CETMs, enriching theapplying power of ICMs theory, and to better understand the mental mechanism ofcoherence of CETMs, helping writer create and readers appreciate them.ICMs theory is based on experientialism and is the basic way for our knowledgeconstruction, stressing on using encyclopedic knowledge to analyze the dynamicdiscourse. A CETM is composed of several sentences and each clause or partconsists of its own ICM. As different ICMs continuously emerge, update andelaborate, they help readers integrate a logical line in the mind, further forming acoherent discourse. There are three kinds of discourse features in the semantic logicof CETMs: normal connections, association connections and deviation connections. And the analysis shows that the four basic models of ICMs ensure the structuring ofCETMs with normal connections and association connections macroscopically, andthe disparity between ICMs of message receivers and message senders, ismicroscopically the key to the interpretation and appreciation of CETMs withdeviation connections.
